YELLOWKNIFE (CP) -- The panel is endorsing the Crab Lake uranium exploration project put forward by Bayswater Uranium Corp., although a second proposal by the same company for a project at EL Lake was rejected.
However, the approval for Crab Lake is conditional on four measures necessary to avoid significant environmental impacts on barren ground caribou and other heritage resources.
Two proposals for uranium projects by Uravan Minerals Inc. at North and South Boomerang Lake were also rejected, mainly to protect the cultural heritage in these areas of the Upper Thelon River Basin.
The review panel's report says aboriginal groups see an industrial development in the area as "incompatible with the cultural values they associate with this spiritually significant landscape.
These recommendations now go to the federal minister of Indian and Northern Affairs and other ministers responsible for regulating such projects.
