The fate of WA's Ellendale diamond mine and about 130 jobs will be known within six weeks after its UK-listed owner indicated it may put it on care and maintenance.
Gem Diamonds has already mothballed part of the Kimberley mine but warned last night the remaining high-value E9 diamond pipe was marginal at current diamond prices.
Gem chief executive Clifford Elphick told The West Australian a decision on whether to place the rest of Ellendale on care and maintenance was "on the cusp", with a final verdict expected at next month's board meeting.
