Few foresaw the resources boom

In the early years of this decade, if you had told most mining bosses the next 10 years would see the biggest resources boom in living memory, you would have received, at best, a blank stare.

This is certainly true of Greig Gailey, former boss of what was once the world's biggest zinc miner, Pasminco.

For the struggling Pasminco, which in 2001 went into administration before being reborn as Zinifex, and to most others, the start of the last decade provided no inkling that a powerful shift in the centre of global commodity demand that would change the face of the resources sector was taking place to our north.
