Continued movement in the right direction politically in Europe may finally give us a set up for a meaningful fall rally in the resource sector. Let’s all cross our virtual fingers and hope the Eurocrats don’t find yet another creative way to wrest defeat from the jaws of victory.

A country that represents less than 2% of the euro block and a tiny fraction of the world economy continues to be the tail that wags the dog. We’ll all have to wait until June 17 to see whether Greeks vote with their emotions or with their heads.

The better the market is the more likely it is that late March to late April will feature large amounts of profit taking and tax gain selling. Given how metal prices and junior resource shares have fared there seems no danger of things getting frothy soon.

We are extremely comfortable that our prognosticating for 2012 may or may not work out. Which puts us in the same camp as most others. That said, a contrarian turn does seem to be gaining ground in the market.

Just how happy the market's New Year will be is still to be determined. The past few months have shaken out a lot of traders as markets seemed to fall apart every time they looked ready to finally break out. That pattern may continue.

Unless the EU fixes everything in the space of the next two weeks plenty of tax loss selling should be expected. Notwithstanding that, we're finding the buying in the bulk material space and strengthening oil price encouraging.

Stick with names that have resources in the ground they are growing. They should react best and see less tax loss selling. Earlier stage companies will find loss selling harder to avoid unless they are delivering good news and promising more to come.
