Precious metals started the new week with mixed results this morning as the euro remained steady around $1.235 but remained at risk of sell-offs and as crude oil advanced by less than 1% on supply worries.

This week’s final trading session opened with the precious metals turning lower across the boards. Gold slipped to within $3 of the $1,600 mark once again overnight and it traded with a loss of $10 per ounce at $1607 in New York at last check.

Even though we now have a Bizarro Mr. Market where every weaker-than-expected economic indicator is viewed in relation to central bank easing, the fundamental picture has not changed for gold and silver.

Volatility is likely to remain this year as speculation builds on even more central bank easing. However, gold’s ability to stem losses on the downside and trade separately from equities makes it a very attractive holding for any portfolio.
