Spot gold dealings opened with a $3.50 per ounce gain in New York and the yellow metal was quoted at the $1,505.10 level on the bid-side. Overnight highs near $1,510.00 were recorded amid dollar-oriented selling overseas.

Tuesday's trading action in New York opened on a slightly defensive note following an overnight interest rate hike by the Chinese central bank and a half-dollar drop in crude oil. Spot gold dealings opened with a small, $0.90 per ounce loss.

What the deflationists fail to acknowledge is that in a pure fiat monetary system deflation is a choice not an inevitability. If a government is willing to sacrifice its currency there is no way deflation can take hold in a modern monetary system.
