The new trading week opened with mixed showings in the precious metals’ complex. Spot gold fell about $5 to the $1,730 bid area, while spot silver eased by 13 cents to near $33.55 per ounce. Platinum advanced $5 to $1,593 and palladium gained an equal amount, to touch $657.

Last year’s ETF gold demand stands at the lowest annual level since these vehicles were launched late in 2004. Many ETF speculators still hold large positions, but recent price drops and rising volatility have eroded a portion of the belief that gold is always a “safe haven” investment.

Precious metals once again attempted to recover as the daily New York trading action got underway on Wednesday. The US dollar showed little in the way of gains and also showed no tendencies to ease much below its recent multi-week highs.

In 1981 the historic '70s gold bull market finally topped out at $850. After adjusting for inflation, to merely equal what it did in 1980, gold would have to go (only) to $2,270!
